Do you want to understand the sacraments but don’t know where to start? The Catechism of the Catholic Church has more than 2,800 numbered paragraphs, and few people read it from cover to cover. This basic catechism course picks out the paragraphs on the sacraments and puts them in order, in 3 short lessons.
Each lesson brings the full text of the Catechism, with the number of every paragraph, an explanation in simple words, three study questions and one small step for the week. The answer key and the Our Father close the file.
Below you can see what is inside, read a sample of the first lesson and download the free PDF. It asks for no sign-up and opens on your phone.

- The full text of 27 paragraphs of the Catechism, each with its number, so you can check it at the source

- 9 study questions, 3 per lesson, with the answer key at the end of the PDF

- Holy Orders and Matrimony presented with the Catechism number of each one

The 3 lessons, one by one
Lesson 1 starts with the most basic question: what is a sacrament? Starting from the definition in the Catechism, it explains what Baptism gives, why it is never repeated and how Confirmation completes what Baptism began. At the end, a simple step: find out the date of your Baptism.
Lesson 2 covers the Eucharist and Sunday Mass. You will see when Jesus instituted it, what the Catechism means by real presence, how to prepare for Communion and what the Church asks about Sunday, including who is excused from the obligation.
Lesson 3 is about two sacraments that sometimes scare people only because nobody explained them: Confession and the Anointing of the Sick. Who forgives sins, what happens to what you tell the priest and when the Anointing is received. The lesson closes with Holy Orders and Matrimony.
Who this PDF is for
For godparents who want to understand the sacrament their godchild is about to receive. Lesson 1 shows what the Catechism says about Baptism and Confirmation, with the number of each passage.
For parents and grandparents who want to talk with children about First Communion and need simple words to explain the Mass and the Eucharist, which are in Lesson 2.
For anyone who drifted away and wants to come back without fear: Lesson 3 calmly explains what happens in Confession and why the priest cannot repeat anything he heard.
And for catechists looking for a summary to prepare a meeting: the Catechism numbers lead straight to the source, and the questions are a good starting point for a conversation.
A sample of the PDF: what is a sacrament, in simple words
To show you how the booklet explains things, this is the first passage of Lesson 1, exactly as it appears in the PDF:
A sign is something you can see that points to something else, like a hug that says “I love you” without words. The Catechism calls the sacraments efficacious signs: they do not only point to God’s grace, they also bring it about. What you see in the rite shows, and at the same time makes real, the grace proper to each sacrament (§ 1131).
Notice that the explanation does not replace the Catechism with something else: it follows what § 1131 says and explains the words that most often slow readers down, such as efficacious and grace.
In the PDF, right before this explanation, comes the whole of § 1131, in the official text. These are the Catechism paragraphs each lesson brings in full:
- Lesson 1, Baptism and Confirmation: §§ 1131, 1213, 1257, 1278, 1279, 1280, 1285, 1316 and 1320
- Lesson 2, the Eucharist and Sunday Mass: §§ 1324, 1337, 1374, 1377, 1385, 1389, 2180 and 2181
- Lesson 3, Confession, Anointing, Holy Orders and Matrimony: §§ 1441, 1442, 1450, 1467, 1514, 1520, 1536, 1601 and 1638
- Closing prayer: § 2759, the Our Father
Where the Catechism text comes from
The Catechism of the Catholic Church was published by Saint John Paul II in 1992 as the reference text for teaching the Catholic faith. Every paragraph quoted in the PDF comes from it.
The text of each paragraph was copied from the official Vatican website, vatican.va, and was not rewritten. What is in simple words is our explanation; what comes with a number is the Catechism.
Because the numbering is the same in every edition, you can find each passage in your printed Catechism and read what comes before and after it.
How to download the PDF
Downloading asks for no name, email or phone number, and nothing to install: the file is hosted on controllerdrop.com itself. There are 2 steps:
- Tap the “Download the free PDF” button, above or at the end of this page.
- The PDF opens in your phone’s reader. To keep it, use the reader’s own download or share option.
How to study with the PDF
One lesson a week is a good pace. Each takes 5 to 8 minutes: read the Catechism text first, then the explanation, answer the 3 questions without looking and only then check the answer key.
If you study in a group, one person reads the Catechism paragraph aloud and another reads the explanation. The questions become a conversation, and the step for the week gives you something to talk about at the next meeting.
To close, slowly pray the Our Father at the end of the PDF. It is the Catechism’s own text, in § 2759.
If a question comes up that the PDF does not answer, take it to the priest or catechist at your parish. The booklet was made to open the conversation, not to end it.
