The Sacraments Explained in Simple Words: Free PDF in 3 Lessons

Baptismal font in a church

Have you ever stood at a baptism, a First Communion or a wedding and wondered what was really happening? Many Catholics learned the sacraments as children and never got a calm answer to the questions that came later. The Catechism of the Catholic Church answers them, but its more than 2,800 numbered paragraphs are a lot to face alone.

This free PDF explains the sacraments in simple words, in 3 short lessons. Each lesson prints the Catechism’s own text, paragraph by paragraph and with its number, and then explains it, so you always know where an idea comes from. There is nothing to pay, no sign-up, and it opens on your phone.

It was written for people who want to understand, not for specialists: godparents, parents, people coming back to the Church and catechists getting a meeting ready. It is not an official Church publication and does not replace catechesis at your parish. Think of it as a calm first step, a few minutes a week.

📋 What you’ll find here

What is inside the 22-page booklet

The 22 pages follow the same pattern in every lesson, so after the first one you know where everything is:

  • 3 lessons: what a sacrament is, with Baptism and Confirmation; the Eucharist and Sunday Mass; Confession and the Anointing of the Sick
  • A short look at Holy Orders and Matrimony at the end of Lesson 3, each with its Catechism paragraph
  • 26 paragraphs of the Catechism printed in full inside the lessons, each one under its number
  • An “In simple words” section in every lesson that unpacks terms such as efficacious sign, character, real presence and sacramental seal
  • 9 practice questions, 3 per lesson, in true-or-false and multiple-choice form
  • An answer key that gives the paragraph number behind every answer
  • 1 small step for the week at the end of each lesson
  • The Our Father as the Catechism presents it in § 2759, to close each lesson

Questions the 3 lessons answer

Lesson 1: why is Baptism never repeated, and what does Confirmation add? The lesson explains what a sacrament is, what Baptism gives and the spiritual mark the Catechism calls a character. It also shows that Confirmation does not replace Baptism: it brings baptismal grace to its fullness.

Lesson 2: what does real presence mean, and who is excused from Sunday Mass? The lesson shows when Jesus instituted the Eucharist, why receiving Communion calls for preparation and what the Church expects of the faithful on Sundays and holy days of obligation.

Lesson 3: can a priest ever repeat what he heard in Confession, and is the Anointing of the Sick only for the dying? The answer to both is no, and the lesson explains why, with the paragraph numbers that back it up.

Read a sample from Lesson 3 first

The best way to judge a booklet is to read a piece of it. These two short passages come from the “In simple words” section of Lesson 3, word for word as they appear in the PDF:

Christ entrusted this power to absolve to the ministry of the apostles, who act in His name (§ 1442). To absolve means to loosen, to set free, to forgive. That is why the priest does not forgive on his own authority: he forgives in the name of Christ.

What is said in Confession stays sealed. Every priest who hears confessions must keep absolute secrecy about the sins confessed to him, with no exception. This is the sacramental seal (§ 1467).

Right after the explanation, the lesson checks it with a question: “True or false: the priest may tell what he heard in Confession if he thinks it would help.” The answer key says false and points to § 1467.

The explanations are ours; the Catechism text is not. These are the paragraphs printed in full in each part of the PDF:

  • Lesson 1, Baptism and Confirmation: §§ 1131, 1213, 1257, 1278, 1279, 1280, 1285, 1316 and 1320
  • Lesson 2, the Eucharist and Sunday Mass: §§ 1324, 1337, 1374, 1377, 1385, 1389, 2180 and 2181
  • Lesson 3, Confession, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony: §§ 1441, 1442, 1450, 1467, 1514, 1520, 1536, 1601 and 1638
  • Closing prayer: § 2759, the Our Father

Our words and the Church’s text, kept apart

Saint John Paul II published the Catechism of the Catholic Church in 1992, to serve as the point of reference for teaching the faith. Every numbered paragraph in the PDF was copied from the text on vatican.va, the Vatican’s official website, and nothing in it was rewritten.

Our team wrote everything else: the simple-words explanations, the questions, the answer key and the weekly steps. The layout keeps the two apart, so you never mistake our explanation for the Catechism itself.

Paragraph numbers are the same in every printing of the Catechism, so any number in the booklet leads you to the same passage in your own copy, with its full context around it.

Getting the PDF and keeping it

To get the booklet, use the “Download the free PDF” button on this page. The file sits on controllerdrop.com, the same site you are reading now. No name, email or phone number is requested, there is no app to install and there is nothing to pay.

Since it is a standard PDF file, your phone opens it with its built-in reader or the browser. Use the reader’s save or share option to keep a copy. It can also be printed at home on ordinary paper if your group prefers pages in hand.

A simple plan: one lesson a week

The booklet itself suggests one lesson a week, and each one takes 5 to 8 minutes.

Begin with the Catechism paragraphs and then the simple-words section. Try the 3 questions from memory before you check the answer key: the paragraph number beside each answer tells you where to reread.

In a group, one person can read the Catechism text aloud and another the explanation. The questions then work as a starter for discussion, and everyone can say how the weekly step went when you meet again.

Close each lesson with the Our Father printed at the end of the PDF. When a question comes up that the booklet does not answer, bring it to a priest or catechist at your parish.

A note from our team

We prepared this article and the PDF as informative material, based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church as published on vatican.va and consulted on November 3, 2026. Neither is an official Church publication, and neither replaces catechesis at your parish or the guidance of a priest. We are not responsible for decisions made on the basis of these pages.

FAQ

Does the PDF cost anything?

No. The whole booklet is free: the 3 lessons, the 9 questions, the answer key and the prayer come in the same file, with no paid part.

Will I have to create an account or give my email?

No. There is no form to fill in and no mailing list: you get the PDF without giving any personal details.

Can I read it on my phone?

Yes. It opens in any PDF reader or in your phone’s browser, and you do not need to install an app.

Is it enough to prepare for Confirmation or First Communion?

No. It helps you understand what the Catechism says about these sacraments, but preparation happens at your parish, with a catechist or priest who knows your situation.

Who wrote the explanations?

Our team wrote the simple-words sections, the questions, the answer key and the weekly steps. The numbered paragraphs are the text of the Catechism, copied from vatican.va without changes.

Is this an official Church document?

No. It is an informative booklet built on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, but the Church did not publish it, and it does not take the place of catechesis at your parish.

Can I share it with my family or my group?

Yes. Send them the link to this page so they can get the same PDF, also without signing up.
